I Ching Explained

In love & relationships

In relationships, Small Taming asks you to slow the courtship of an outcome. Do not press for commitment, a label, or a resolution before the connection has ripened. Tend the small things: attention, honesty, shared ease. If tension exists, hold it a little longer rather than forcing a talk that neither of you is ready for. Love that is hurried at this stage arrives strained; love that is tended arrives solid.

Hexagram 9 Small Taming — In love & relationships

小畜 · Xiǎo Chù  ·  upper Wind over lower Heaven

You have momentum but not yet permission.

Upper ☴ WindLower ☰ HeavenWood over Metal

The reading

Small Taming describes a moment when your energy is real but the conditions are not. The wind gathers above heaven, clouds thicken, yet nothing falls. This is not failure; it is the stage before a launch, when a project is strong enough to exist but not strong enough to prevail. Your task is to stay close to the work without forcing the outcome, tending relationships and details that will matter when the moment comes.

The restraining element here is small, one yielding line among five firm ones, so the blockage is not a wall but a hand on your shoulder. Listen to it. Refine the proposal, deepen the coalition, study the terrain you are about to cross. People who push through Small Taming exhaust themselves against weather; people who respect it arrive later but intact, and often find the door opens before they knock.

The image

Wind moves above heaven, gentle currents gathering where the great sky cannot yet rain. Dense clouds form and darken, holding their water, a storm patiently organizing itself before release.

Patience is not waiting; it is the art of arriving fully prepared.

When you cast this hexagram

  • A launch, announcement, or bold move that keeps getting delayed.
  • A negotiation where pushing harder would only stiffen the other side.
  • A creative project that needs more craft before it goes public.
  • A season of saving, practicing, and quietly building your reserves.

Love that is hurried at this stage arrives strained; love that is tended arrives solid.

In work and career

At work this hexagram favors preparation over announcement. The product is not ready, the pitch is not ripe, the promotion case needs one more quarter of evidence. Use the delay: improve the numbers, line up supporters, learn the objections you will face. Pushing a launch through thin clouds gets you a weak rain. Patience here is not passivity; it is the discipline of arriving with everything loaded.

When you have a decision to make

When a real decision is on the table, Small Taming says: not yet, and use the interval well. Set a clear condition for action rather than an open-ended wait, so restraint becomes strategy instead of drift. Decide what you will improve in the meantime and what signal tells you the clouds can finally rain. A decision made now would be thin; one made after this gathering phase will land with weight.

The six changing lines

Read only the lines that came up moving in your own cast. If none did, stay with the hexagram as a whole. Each line below links to the hexagram that line turns into.

Line 6 · yang ○ · if it changes → 5 Waiting

The rain has come and the work is done. Rest on what is achieved, and watch the turn: every fullness declines, so consolidate rather than expand.

Sincerity now reaches the neighbors and binds them to you. Shared success replaces rivalry; what you have held back returns to you enriched.

This yielding line meets the situation with sincerity, and the blockage dissolves around it. Trust, honestly offered, does what force could not.

Line 3 · yang ○ · if it changes → 61 Inner Truth

Push against the restraint and something breaks: the spokes fly off the wheels. Striving now brings quarrels; release the forcing before the damage spreads.

Line 2 · yang ○ · if it changes → 37 The Family

You are drawn back into the fold by a stronger hand. Accept the recall with grace; this restraint protects you and will release you in time.

Line 1 · yang ○ · if it changes → 57 The Gentle

At the very start, turning back is easy and costs nothing. Notice the small check on your momentum and return to your proper course before you invest.
