I Ching Explained

In love & relationships

In love, Treading warns against both carelessness and control. You may be involved with someone easily wounded, or the relationship itself may be under outside pressure from family or circumstance. Do not test the bond with provocations or ultimatums. Be exact in your promises and gentle in your timing. A delicate connection survives on courtesy: say what you mean, keep what you say, and give the tiger no reason to turn.

Hexagram 10 Treading — In love & relationships

履 · Lǚ  ·  upper Heaven over lower Lake

You are walking close to something powerful: a dangerous person, a strict hierarchy, or a situation that punishes mistakes.

Upper ☰ HeavenLower ☱ LakeMetal over Metal

The reading

Treading is the art of moving through dangerous territory without setting it off. The tiger in this hexagram is real power: a volatile boss, a legal process, a fragile negotiation, any force that could turn on you. You do not defeat it, flatter it, or flee it. You pass it by conducting yourself so correctly that no fault can be found, each word measured and each step placed with intention.

The lower trigram is the lake, joy and openness; the upper is heaven, strength. This pairing says your footing must be light even where the stakes are heavy. Keep promises small and exact, avoid grand claims, and do not provoke what you cannot control. Conduct here is not timidity but precision: the person who treads correctly crosses the courtyard of power and leaves unbitten, reputation intact and path still open.

The image

Heaven stands above the lake, the high over the low, strength over delight. The image is of treading on the tiger's tail: the beast does not bite, because each step was placed with care.

Walk softly past power, and let your conduct be your armor.

When you cast this hexagram

  • Navigating a difficult authority figure or volatile personality at work.
  • A legal, contractual, or bureaucratic process where the stakes are high.
  • Walking into a negotiation where one side holds all the leverage.
  • Any situation where one wrong word could undo months of work.

In love and relationships

In love, Treading warns against both carelessness and control. You may be involved with someone easily wounded, or the relationship itself may be under outside pressure from family or circumstance. Do not test the bond with provocations or ultimatums. Be exact in your promises and gentle in your timing. A delicate connection survives on courtesy: say what you mean, keep what you say, and give the tiger no reason to turn.

In work and career

At work this is the hexagram of the delicate maneuver: the merger talk, the performance review, the client who could end the contract. Keep your conduct impeccable and your claims modest. Document agreements, meet deadlines early, and avoid gossip about the powerful. Do not posture or pick fights you cannot finish. People who tread well through such periods often emerge with their standing improved, because everyone noticed the poise.

When you have a decision to make

With a real decision pending, Treading advises a slow and exact advance. Map the risks precisely: who holds the power, what could trigger it, and what a misstep would cost. Then move in small, correct steps, keeping every commitment you make. Do not decide from pride or from fear. The right choice here is the one you can execute flawlessly under scrutiny, not the boldest one on the table.

The six changing lines

Read only the lines that came up moving in your own cast. If none did, stay with the hexagram as a whole. Each line below links to the hexagram that line turns into.

Line 6 · yang ○ · if it changes → 58 The Joyous

Look back at the footprints you have left. Review the whole course of your conduct; a life walked carefully ends in good fortune.

Line 5 · yang ○ · if it changes → 38 Opposition

Resolute, decisive steps, taken with open eyes about the danger. Firm conduct at the top of affairs succeeds when it respects what it faces.

Line 4 · yang ○ · if it changes → 61 Inner Truth

Now you are close to the teeth, and fear is appropriate. Tread with full caution and apprehension, and what looked like danger ends in good fortune.

This is the weak line that overreaches: the one-eyed claiming sight, the lame claiming speed. It treads the tiger's tail and is bitten; misfortune follows presumption.

Line 2 · yang ○ · if it changes → 25 Innocence

Keep to the smooth, level path and do not perform for anyone. Quiet constancy, away from the center of power, brings good fortune.

Line 1 · yang ○ · if it changes → 6 Conflict

Walk your own simple way and there is no blame. Modest, steady conduct at the start needs no audience and attracts no danger.
