比 · Bǐ  ·  upper Water over lower Earth

This hexagram is about union: water resting on the earth, flowing together naturally.

The reading

Holding Together is the hexagram of belonging. Water above, earth below: the streams run together because that is their nature, not because anyone ordered it. This hexagram appears around alliances of all kinds: marriages, friendships, teams, movements. Its insight is that union is a fact before it is a choice. People are connected; the question is whether the connection is acknowledged and tended. The hexagram is optimistic: togetherness multiplies what each person could do alone.

But the hexagram sets one strict condition, stated in its very first lines: the motive must be genuine. Union for advantage, for fear of being alone, or for appearances will not hold: it unravels at the first strain. There is also a warning about timing: come to the union willingly and early. Those who join late, after the bond is formed, find themselves on the outside. Choose your people with care, commit fully once chosen, and tend the bond like something alive, because it is.

The image

Water on the earth: streams finding each other and becoming a river. The old image is people gathering around a well, drawn by need, held by trust.

Union holds only when the heart behind it is true.

When you cast this hexagram

  • A union is forming around you; join it willingly and early.
  • Check your motive honestly: is this bond genuine or merely convenient?
  • Choose your people with real care, then commit to them fully.
  • Tend the bond with real attention; neglected unions quietly unravel.

In love and relationships

This is a beautiful love hexagram, with one condition. It favors unions entered willingly and for the right reasons: genuine affection, shared values, liking. If you are choosing a partner, choose with your eyes open and then commit without reservation. For couples, it asks for renewal: tend the bond, the way you would water a plant, not the way you maintain an appliance. The warning is sharp: a union held together by fear, habit, or appearances is over; it has not admitted it yet.

In work and career

Professionally, Holding Together is about alliances: partnerships, teams, networks, client relationships. It favors joining forces: the merger, the collaboration, the hire that completes the team. Choose allies for shared values, not just complementary skills; skill gaps can be trained, value gaps cannot. If you lead, your job is to be the center people gather around willingly: clear, fair, and consistent. The caution: do not cling to a failing partnership from fear of being alone. A union that drains you is not loyalty; it is inertia.

When you have a decision to make

When the decision is about joining or staying: a partnership, a team, a community, this hexagram says yes, provided the motive is clean. Ask the question first: am I joining from alignment or from fear of missing out? If alignment, commit fully and do not look back. If fear, walk away. For leaving a union, the rule is equally simple: a bond kept alive only by habit has already ended. Name that truth and act on it with respect.

The six changing lines

Read only the lines that came up moving in your own cast. If none did, stay with the hexagram as a whole. Each line below links to the hexagram that line turns into.

A union with no center cannot hold together for long. If no one is truly leading, either step up or step out.

Line 5 · yang ○ · if it changes → 2 The Receptive

Lead so well that people join you willingly and unforced. True authority attracts followers; it never has to chase them.

Reach beyond your inner circle now. This outward bond is sound and timely: extend yourself to meet it.

You have allied yourself with the wrong crowd. Acknowledge the mismatch honestly and step away with your dignity intact.

Let this union come from your own center rather than from outside pressure. What is genuine within you radiates outward naturally.

Come to this union sincerely, without games or hidden agendas. An honest beginning sets the tone for everything that follows.
