Hexagram 43: Breakthrough
夬 · Guài · upper Lake over lower Heaven
Five strong lines press upward against a single weak line at the top: the breakthrough is near, and the truth must be announced.
The reading
Breakthrough is the hexagram of the decisive announcement. Five yang lines rise against a single yin at the top: the old order's last resistance, about to give way. The image is of speaking truth in the royal court, openly and without hiding. This is the moment to name what everyone knows but no one says: the failing plan, the hidden fault, the person who must go. The breakthrough comes through clarity, not force.
Announce, then stop. The hexagram's warning is against pushing past the announcement into vengeance or excess; once the truth is spoken, let events take their course. Speak to the right audience, in the right place, with clean intent. Do not gloat, do not pile on, and do not turn the breakthrough into a purge. A clean statement of truth resolves; a prolonged campaign corrupts. Say it once, say it well, and let the waters settle.
The image
The lake has risen above the heavens: waters piled high, about to break through. The wise bestow their gifts downward and rest in virtue, never hoarding their strength.
Say the true thing once, clearly, and then stop.
When you cast this hexagram
- Naming aloud the truth everyone knows but no one says.
- The announcement you have now been postponing for too long.
- The wisdom now of knowing when the announcement is enough.
- The calm that follows when truth is finally spoken openly.
In love and relationships
In love, Breakthrough is the thing that must be said. Name the issue plainly and kindly: the behavior that hurts, the need unmet, the truth avoided. Say it once, say it clearly, and say it to your partner directly, not to everyone else. Then stop pushing; let the words do their work. Do not turn honesty into a weapon or the conversation into a trial. A clean, loving statement of truth can break the stalemate. A prolonged prosecution only breaks the bond.
In work and career
At work, Breakthrough is the moment to speak the plain truth: the project is failing, the numbers do not work, the leader must change. Say it in the right forum, clearly and without malice. Then stop; do not campaign, gossip, or push for punishment. Let the announcement do its work. Those who speak truth cleanly earn lasting respect, even from the uncomfortable. Those who turn it into a crusade lose the very credibility the truth gave them.
When you have a decision to make
When a real decision is on the table, Breakthrough says the decision is the announcement itself. Stop deliberating in private; speak the conclusion openly and let it stand. Choose the clean, public statement over the quiet maneuver. But once spoken, do not keep pushing the point or punishing the losers. The right decision here is made once, stated clearly, and then left to work. Restraint after the breakthrough is what separates resolution from revenge.
The six changing lines
Read only the lines that came up moving in your own cast. If none did, stay with the hexagram as a whole. Each line below links to the hexagram that line turns into.
At the top, there is no one left to warn; silence now ends in misfortune. The final weak line must still be addressed.
Breakthrough like weeds cleared from the hill: thorough and central. Walk the middle way and there is no blame.
The seat is raw and the walk is halting. Lead gently like guiding sheep and regret vanishes; but words alone convince no one.
Force written on the face brings misfortune. Decide cleanly and walk alone if you must; even meeting rain, there is no blame.
Sound the alarm and stay watchful, even at night. There is no need for worry if you remain alert; vigilance is enough.
Strength in the front toes: charging ahead now will not win. At the start, going forward brings only blame; hold your ground.
How it relates to the other hexagrams
These links are derived from the line structure, not from editorial opinion. Flip a line, reverse the stack, or read the inner lines, and you land on a specific neighbour.
Nuclear · 互卦
Lines 2–4 and 3–5 of this hexagram form another one. It is the inner situation — what is really going on underneath what you were asking about.
Complementary · 错卦
Every line flips. This is the exact opposite stance: the position you are not taking, which is often the thing the reading is contrasting you with.
Inverse · 综卦
Turn the whole stack upside down and you get this. The same circumstance seen from the other end — usually the person on the other side of it.
