I Ching Explained

In love & relationships

In love, The Receptive favors devotion over pursuit. If you are single, the advice is to become the kind of person who can receive love well: cultivate your own life rather than chasing. In a relationship, it asks for generosity of attention: listen more than you speak, support your partner's growth. The warning is against self-erasure. Devotion that costs you your dignity is not devotion; it is disappearance. A healthy union here is two whole people choosing softness, not one person vanishing.

Hexagram 2 The Receptive — In love & relationships

坤 · Kūn  ·  upper Earth over lower Earth

This is the hexagram of pure receptivity: earth above and earth below, six yielding lines.

Upper ☷ EarthLower ☷ EarthEarth over Earth

The reading

The Receptive is the complement of The Creative: where the first hexagram generates, this one completes. Six broken lines, earth over earth. It represents the power of devotion, patience, and service: the capacity to support a vision without needing to own it. When this hexagram appears, the situation does not need another driver. It needs someone who listens, adapts, and holds things steady while others move.

There is a discipline in receptivity that looks like passivity but is not. The earth does not chase the seasons; it receives them, and everything grows. The caution here runs the other way from The Creative: do not disappear entirely. Support is noble, but the hexagram warns against losing your own center in service of someone else's direction. Follow what is worthy. If the lead is unworthy, the Receptive has the quiet power to withdraw.

The image

Earth doubled: the ground beneath the ground, carrying everything without effort. The old image is a mare, gentle, tireless, and wise enough to follow.

To receive well is its own kind of strength.

When you cast this hexagram

  • You are supporting someone's vision; do it wholeheartedly or step back.
  • The situation needs patience more than bold action right now.
  • Listen carefully first; the right response will then become obvious.
  • A person genuinely worthy of following has entered your life.

In love and relationships

In love, The Receptive favors devotion over pursuit. If you are single, the advice is to become the kind of person who can receive love well: cultivate your own life rather than chasing. In a relationship, it asks for generosity of attention: listen more than you speak, support your partner's growth. The warning is against self-erasure. Devotion that costs you your dignity is not devotion; it is disappearance. A healthy union here is two whole people choosing softness, not one person vanishing.

In work and career

At work, The Receptive rewards the supporters, organizers, and steady hands: the people who make ambitious plans actually function. This is a good time to be indispensable rather than visible: document, coordinate, follow through. If you lead a team, lead by enabling others rather than by directive. Promotions come through reliability here, not self-promotion. The caution: make sure your contributions are seen by the right people. Quiet competence still needs one witness, or it goes unrewarded.

When you have a decision to make

Faced with a decision under The Receptive, resist the urge to force an answer. The hexagram suggests the situation is still forming, and premature action would only disturb it. Instead, gather information, consult people you trust, and let the shape of the right choice emerge. Ask: what would it look like to support the best outcome rather than seize it? If after honest waiting nothing clarifies, the decision may be to continue waiting, which is itself a decision, and a respectable one.

The six changing lines

Read only the lines that came up moving in your own cast. If none did, stay with the hexagram as a whole. Each line below links to the hexagram that line turns into.

Receptivity pushed past its natural limit turns into open conflict. If you feel the fighting energy rising, that is your signal to step back.

Your worth is genuine but best carried modestly. Let your substance speak for itself instead of putting it on display.

Line 4 · yin ✕ · if it changes → 16 Enthusiasm

This is a time to stay low, keep your plans to yourself, and say little. Caution now prevents real trouble later.

Line 3 · yin ✕ · if it changes → 15 Modesty

You have real ability; keep it in reserve for now. Serve a worthy cause and wait for your moment.

Line 2 · yin ✕ · if it changes → 7 The Army

Be direct and genuine in all your dealings, without forcing anything at all. What is truly solid needs no decoration.

Line 1 · yin ✕ · if it changes → 24 Return

Small signs are showing, like frost before winter. Notice them now while they are still easy to address.

How it relates to the other hexagrams

These links are derived from the line structure, not from editorial opinion. Flip a line, reverse the stack, or read the inner lines, and you land on a specific neighbour.

Nuclear · 互卦

02 The Receptive
坤 · Kūn

Lines 2–4 and 3–5 of this hexagram form another one. It is the inner situation — what is really going on underneath what you were asking about.

Complementary · 错卦

01 The Creative
乾 · Qián

Every line flips. This is the exact opposite stance: the position you are not taking, which is often the thing the reading is contrasting you with.

Inverse · 综卦

02 The Receptive
坤 · Kūn

Turn the whole stack upside down and you get this. The same circumstance seen from the other end — usually the person on the other side of it. This hexagram reverses into itself, so it is its own inverse.
